There are many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks working for 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than a week.”
Owing to their rapid automated cutter, that converted timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.

The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s first authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part transformed the circular movement into vertical action for the cutting blade.
