European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
