Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
