Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
