Much like bad weather tore through the north-west the prior day, City blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline marked successive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to juggle league and continental football with a thin team has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they seemed fatigued throughout, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Former City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a single shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have added to their cushion when a excellent Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team.
